- Streaming media
- Replication
- Personalization
- Secure delivery (encryption, IRM, BRM)
- Smart cache
- High availability
- The third pillar of the Interactive Content Management platform is simultaneous global, multi-channel publishing. The first step that often needs to take place prior to publishing is to transform content into the appropriate format. For example, a broadcast video may have to be converted to MPEG-4 for use on a mobile device. An InDesign layout may need to be converted to PDF.
- A high-res image may have to be converted to a lower-res file for use on the website. These transformations are facilitated by the Documentum Content Transformation Services products. Often the delivery of high bandwidth video is a challenge for many customers. By converting HD video into a streamable format such as WMV (Windows Media Video) or QuickTime, video can be delivered from the Documentum repository directly to the browser. The results in better performance and less dropouts while improving security (since the source content is not sent to the client machine).
- Another dimension of the problem is to render and publish content for existing and emerging channels. These include traditional channels such as print, web site, broadcast, and e-mail but also emerging channels such as mobile devices, streaming, on demand video, IPTV, blogs, podcasts, RSS, social sites, and virtual worlds.
- Personalization is the act of managing multiple audience segments to deliver relevant content based on past user behavior. Pervasive and personalized means essentially three things: managing multiple audience segments to deliver relevant content abased on past user behavior; executing on global web strategies (ie foreign language sites centrally managed and fully featured); provide analytics and reporting tools that measure effectively and conversion rates.
- EMC Documentum IRM Services for Documentum delivers the unique ability to secure and control content once it leaves the content repository. Documentum IRM Services for Documentum enhances your document security by enabling users to create secure cabinets and folders in order for content to seamlessly inherit rights (when and how it can be used). Use this sophisticated information rights management technology to ensure that sensitive information remains secure as it is shared internally or with partners, suppliers, and outside constituents.
Transform Content
- Automated metadata attribution

- Content Transformation Services offers up a wide range of content conversion from simple document transformations like office documents to PDF or HTML to more complex capabilities such as rich media transformation that automate the conversion of content for a specific purpose or channels such as an image that is used in print, then on the web, wireless or any other emerging channel. CTS also provides automatic enhancements to content like metadata attribution, thumbnails, storyboards and browser previews making it easier and faster to locate the right content.

- So let’s take a look at what the breakdown of the CTS products are and what content formats they provide transformation and analysis for.
- Document Transformation Services (formerly known as AutoRender Pro or Content Rendition Services) automates and standardizes the conversion of standard desktop document formats into Web-ready formats such as PDF and HTML.
- Advanced Document Transformation Services extends the capabilities of EMC Documentum Document Transformation Services by providing additional PDF rendering for multi-page TIFF, AutoCAD 2002, Microsoft® Visio and Project. Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services also provides additional format and metadata extraction support—a necessity for content authors who use advanced features such as template styles, hyperlinks, and URLs in their source documents and wish to preserve these features in their PDF documents. ADTS also provides support for the electronic common technical document (eCTD) specification submission process.
- Media Transformation Services (formerly known as Media Services) puts users in control of their digital assets by delivering transformation and analysis for rich media content such as photographs, presentations, and graphics.
- Audio Video Transformation Services is an add-on to Media Transformation Services that delivers enhanced support for audio, video, and Flash content.
- XML Transformation Services can transform and render XML documents into a variety of formats for customers that want to leverage the power behind authoring and managing their content in XML. It includes an eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) engine and a style sheet toolkit.
Intelligence and Automation with CTS
- Within Digital Asset Manager, the transformation wizard can be accessed. Based on the source format being transformed, it presents only the list of content transformations that can be performed for the given content. It is very easy to use and you can quickly and easily manipulate rich-media without needing to be a graphic artist or designer. You can also save the transformation on a given asset so it will automatically create a new rendition based on your preferences each time a new version of the asset is checked in. Transformations can also be automatically triggered via Documentum workflows and there are CTS activity templates than can be installed and used inside Documentum Process Builder.
Web Authoring
- Another key component of Interactive Content is the area of Web Presence, specifically the creation, administration and deployment of a website.
- To forge a relationship with their audience customers need Websites that will provide: Fresh, relevant, personalized, multilingual sites. The challenges is two-fold: 1. understanding what the customer experience should be and 2. how to provide it efficiently and cost effectively. As companies launched Websites, around 1998 – 2000, they spent large sums of money through custom-coding, agencies and so forth in attempts to achieve the second objective. With the majority of the content management systems – the focus has been Web consolidation and knowledge worker productivity to drive out the costs of custom-coding and Web master bottlenecks.
- Customers have diverse teams working on the various components of a Web site and the Web experience. It could be rich media (like images or videos), it would be text-based content (product descriptions, promotions and so forth), it is the layout and design of the site. It would be various Web applications they interact with: java-script (of a rotating banner), an online form and so forth.
- EMC Documentum provides the tools for the users to work on and collaborate with during the Web content creation process. The content will go through workflows and approval cycles. The content is often worked on in a WIP (Work in Progress) State. As it is approved it moves to staging and final to production – all managed by lifecycles.
- Finally what the Web Publishing engine does is assemble the content into presentation layers and transform into Web formats like .jsp, .asp, wml., html and so forth. This is all done by server-side technologies managing the various versions, relationships and links.
- Perhaps most importantly EMC Documentum provides the non-technical tools to create and deliver the Web experience customers are looking for. The tools take advantage of WYSIWYG approaches so that non-technical users have similar easy-to-use experience they would expect if posting a video to YouTube or creating their MySpace .
- Here we are showing a screenshot of the Documentum Web Publisher Contributor UI. This streamlined “3-button” approach to web publishing is designed to allow anyone to quickly and easily create or modify a web page. The Web Publisher Page Builder UI allows users to drag-and-drop static (text boxes, images) and dynamic (Flash content, RSS feeds) onto a page based on content stored in the Documentum repository.
Creative Workflow
- Creative workflow is different between departments and between customers so there is a definite need for a flexible system that’s able to model the processes that an enterprise may already have in place within the Documentum repository.
- EMC Documentum Process Builder enables you to easily implement creative process models and deploy them for execution by Documentum Process Engine. A graphical tool, Process Builder uses a set of pre-defined and customizable templates for process activities such as automated tasks, user-handled tasks, content and data management, and integrations with external systems. Through Process Builder’s tight integration with Documentum Forms Builder, users can associate form and user interface layout elements with process data, enabling human interaction with workflows, business processes, and repository objects.
- EMC Documentum Process Engine carries out the orchestration, execution, and management of business processes in a production environment. It automatically evaluates process models from Documentum Process Builder, assessing business rules and assigning process tasks to the correct system, group, or individual at the appropriate time.
- Users interact with Documentum Process Engine through a set of interfaces that control and provide context for tasks, work lists, escalations, and notifications. Process Engine uses configurable policies and queue management to effectively distribute large volumes of work, and it enforces priorities and deadlines so that processes comply with service-level agreements.
